I'm thinking o...Kudos on your most excellent blog! I'm thinking of a blue carpet that a certain precocious tot grew up on for her first 2 years. Aaaaaaand, I'm looking at the blue carpet in my own recently acquired home. Um, well, blue is good.

Ah, homemaking. It's a noble cause... one of the most noble, provided it actually does anyone any good (and it can). I have to remind myself from time to time that there's a difference between art and craft. Art is for its own sake, and craft is for a purpose. In my book, homemaking is a craft, and while some artistic elements can be brought in, the purpose is to make a good home. Period. That makes it extremely powerful--more powerful and subtle than art.

As for standards, I couldn't agree with you more. This is how society controls us, it's how we are fooled into buying stuff we don't need, and it's how we make ourselves miserable. Internal standards, if they are pure, are the only way to go. Unfortunately, we often internalize the standards of our parents, churches, television shows, and on and on.

The trick is to remember, dear Sasha, that you are a sovereign spiritual being, and the choices that you make can be based on clear thought and intuition. So pull out your sword and hack away at those impossible and stupid external standards. I will poke them with my knitting needles.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-216375201638830660.post-8515347879948959592009-01-29T11:36:00.000-06:002009-01-29T11:36:00.000-06:00My goal has been to make my home as spa-like and r...My goal has been to make my home as spa-like and relaxing as humanly possible for all members of my family. If this means that the family room is toy strewn and decorated primarily in Lego and Fischer Price but still dominated by the TV and the RockBand set, then so be it. I will paint my walls and carpet the floors in bold but soothing colors, burn scented candles and incense (to cover the smell of diapers in the house), and make sure there are cozy corners where someone can sit an read or nap (pets included). My only stumbling block seems to be in keeping everything as clean as I would like. I still wish I could afford a maid as there is just not enough time in a working mom's life to vacuum or mop as much as I should be. Ah well. No one to my knowledge has ever said on his or her death bed "I wish I had spent less time with my family and more time cleaning!"Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-216375201638830660.post-59289150565151149912009-01-29T09:48:00.000-06:002009-01-29T09:48:00.000-06:00Here here!
